Overview

The Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake is one of Nepal's classic long-distance treks, including a side trip to Tilicho Lake at 4,919 meters and a crossing of Thorong La Pass at 5,416 meters. Over 18 days, you’ll travel through river valleys, terraced hillsides, mountain villages, high-alpine terrain, and the dry landscapes of the Manang and Mustang valleys.

Much of the Annapurna Circuit follows ancient salt trade routes between Nepal and Tibet. These paths, once walked by pilgrims and traders, now welcome trekkers from around the world. Starting in the subtropical lowlands of Besisahar at 760 meters, the trail climbs through terraced fields, waterfalls, and traditional villages to the high valleys near Tilicho Lake. After crossing Thorong La, the trail goes down through the Kali Gandaki Gorge to Muktinath.

The Annapurna region is home to diverse communities. While the Gurung and Magar people live in the lower valleys, the Manangi and Thakali communities are found higher up, reflecting strong Tibetan influence. Traditional stone-built villages are decorated with mani walls, prayer flags, chortens, and village monasteries, including centuries-old gompas in Braga and Manang. You can also visit Muktinath Temple and bathe in its 108 sacred water spouts.

The trek passes through the Annapurna Conservation Area, Nepal's largest protected area. Its wildlife ranges from langurs and barking deer in the lower valleys to blue sheep, musk deer, pikas, and, occasionally, snow leopards higher up, along with birdlife such as the Himalayan monal and Himalayan griffon.

The Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake is a strenuous trek best suited to experienced trekkers comfortable with long days at high altitude. It offers diverse landscapes, mountain communities, ancient history, and unique culture in a single journey.
