Overview

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek is one of Nepal's most popular short treks into the heart of the Himalayas. It takes you deep into the Annapurna Sanctuary and to the base of Mt. Annapurna I at 4,130 meters. The trek combines traditional Gurung villages, rhododendron forests, river valleys, and spectacular mountain views, with Machhapuchhre Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp as its main highlights.

The route passes through Gurung communities around Ghandruk and Chhomrong, where traditional stone houses, terraced fields, and local teahouses are part of everyday mountain life. The villages offer a glimpse into the culture and traditions of communities that have lived in the Annapurna foothills for generations.

Beginning in the subtropical forest and terraced fields of the lower region, the trek climbs through narrow mountain settlements and valleys to reach the Annapurna Sanctuary. Annapurna Base Camp, at 4,130 meters, is the highest point of the trek, offering a 360-degree panorama of Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna, and Machhapuchhre.

Much of the lower route passes through the Annapurna Conservation Area, with forests of rhododendron, bamboo, oak, and other Himalayan vegetation. These forests provide habitat for wildlife, including Himalayan tahr, musk deer, and Himalayan monal, though sightings are never guaranteed.

With the perfect blend of villages, forests, mountain trails, cultures, and local traditions, this trek offers a compact yet comprehensive introduction to the Annapurna Himalayas.

Itinerary

Welcome to Nepal! Your Annapurna Base Camp Trek begins with your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. After clearing customs, our representative will meet you in the arrivals hall and transfer you to your hotel in Patan. This historic city, on the southern side of the Kathmandu Valley, is known for its temples, courtyards, Newari architecture, and skilled artisans.

You'll stay at a heritage or boutique hotel near the main Patan Durbar Square. After checking in, take some time to freshen up and recover from your journey. If you arrive early, take a short walk to explore some of Patan's historic neighborhoods nearby.

In the evening, you'll join the group for a pre-trek briefing. Your guide will cover the route, accommodations, meals, walking hours, altitude, and safety tips for the trek. After the briefing, enjoy a welcome dinner at a local Nepali restaurant with traditional food and a cultural performance.

Overnight: Heritage/Boutique Hotel, Patan
Meals:
Welcome Dinner

After breakfast, your tour guide will meet you in the hotel lobby and take you on a heritage tour of Patan. You'll begin at Patan Durbar Square, one of the finest examples of Newari architecture in the Kathmandu Valley.

From the main square, you'll wander into quieter parts of the old city, discovering hidden courtyards, bahals, bihars, temples, shrines, and narrow lanes that are easy to miss on your own. Patan is known for its long tradition of art and craftsmanship, so you might see local artisans working with metal, wood, and stone, using skills passed down through generations.

The guided tour continues with a local culinary experience. Rather than eating at a typical tourist restaurant, you'll visit some of Patan's hidden spots to try traditional Newari dishes, local snacks, sweets, and drinks, where locals eat. Your guide will introduce the food, explain what you're tasting, and share the food traditions that make Patan special.

After the food tour, return to your hotel and spend the evening organizing your gear, packing your bags, and finishing any last-minute shopping. If you need to buy or rent trekking gear, let your guide know. They can take you to reputable outdoor shops and help you get everything you need before heading to the mountains.

Overnight: Heritage/Boutique Hotel, Patan
Meals:
Breakfast, Lunch

After breakfast, you will drive to the domestic terminal at Kathmandu Airport for your morning flight to Pokhara. The flight takes about 25 minutes and offers views of the hills and the Himalayas.

Pokhara is the gateway to the Annapurna region and sits beneath the impressive Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. On clear days, Machhapuchhre stands prominently above the city, with Phewa Lake stretching below the surrounding green hills.

Upon arrival at Pokhara Airport, you'll drive to your hotel near Lakeside. After checking in, settle into your room and freshen up. The rest of the day is yours to explore Lakeside, walk along Phewa Lake, visit local shops, or relax at the hotel.

Overnight: Hotel, Pokhara
Meals: Breakfast

You'll begin the day with a drive from Pokhara to the foothills of the Annapurna range. The drive follows the Baglung-Pokhara Highway, turns toward Nayapul, and continues along the Modi Khola River.

As you leave the valley, the road climbs through terraced farms and small hillside villages. The landscape becomes more mountainous and rocky as you approach Ghandruk.

Ghandruk is one of Annapurna's most popular Gurung settlements. After lunch, you can walk along its stone-paved lanes, visit the Gurung Museum, and observe daily life around the old houses and courtyards. You will also get your first close-up views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre.

Overnight: Teahouse
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today, you'll begin your first day of trekking. The route climbs from Ghandruk to Kimrong Ridge, then descends through the forest into the Kimrong Khola Valley.

After crossing the river, the trail climbs again through the forest and terraced fields. The steady ups and downs give you a good sense of what to expect on the rest of the route to Annapurna Base Camp.

Nestled on a steep hillside, Chhomrong is one of the region's largest Gurung settlements and the last permanent village on the trail to Annapurna Base Camp. Beyond this point, settlements primarily serve as stops for trekkers heading deeper into the sanctuary.

Overnight: Teahouse
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

You'll descend from Chhomrong along a long set of stone steps toward the Chhomrong Khola. On the valley floor, you'll cross a small suspension bridge and begin the steep climb along the forested path to Sinuwa.

From Sinuwa, you'll continue through a dense forest of bamboo, rhododendron, and other Himalayan vegetation. The trail winds deeper into the Modi Khola Valley, with the river flowing below.

After passing through the small settlement of Bamboo, the trail continues along the river toward Dovan. The forest remains dense in this section, and the valley gradually narrows as you gain elevation.

Dovan is a small settlement nestled beside the Modi Khola, with a handful of teahouses. After checking in, you'll have time to rest and enjoy the quiet surroundings before heading higher into the Annapurna Sanctuary tomorrow.

Overnight: Teahouse
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today, you'll head deeper into the Annapurna Sanctuary. From Dovan, the trail passes through dense forest toward Himalaya Hotel and Hinku Cave. The cave is a large rock overhang that has long provided shelter to trekkers and porters traveling up and down the valley.

Beyond Hinku Cave, the trail descends briefly toward the Modi Khola before climbing to Deurali. Here, the treeline gradually gives way to open valleys and alpine landscape.

From Deurali, you'll follow the Modi Khola upstream toward Machhapuchhre Base Camp. Sitting beneath the distinctive Machhapuchhre, this base camp offers close-up views of Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and surrounding peaks.

After reaching the base camp, take time to explore and enjoy the mountain views before settling into your teahouse for the night.

Overnight: Teahouse
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today, you leave Machhapuchhre Base Camp for the final approach to Annapurna Base Camp. The trail climbs gently through open alpine landscape, following the Modi Khola deeper into the sanctuary. As the valley opens, the surrounding peaks on both sides of the trail become more prominent.

You will soon enter the Annapurna Sanctuary, a natural amphitheater surrounded by some of the region's highest mountains. Although the distance is relatively short, the altitude can make it difficult and slow. Maintain a steady pace, stay hydrated, and take frequent breaks as you approach base camp.

At 4,130 meters, Annapurna Base Camp is the highest point of the trek. From here, you'll get close-up views of Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna, Machhapuchhre, and other Himalayan peaks. Take time to explore, enjoy the views, and soak in the setting before calling it a night.

Overnight: Teahouse
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast, you'll begin the return journey from Annapurna Base Camp. The trail retraces the route through the Annapurna Sanctuary toward Machhapuchhre Base Camp, then continues past Deurali and Hinku Cave. Though it's the same trail, the views and perspective feel different on the way back.

You'll continue downhill along the Modi Khola until you reach Bamboo, where you'll spend the night. After the long, steep descent from base camp, give your body time to settle and recover.

Overnight: Teahouse
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Heading out of Bamboo, you'll continue through the forested trail toward Sinuwa and Chhomrong. The trail climbs and descends through hills before reaching the familiar village of Chhomrong.

From Chhomrong, you'll take an alternative trail toward Jhinu Danda, a small hillside settlement overlooking the Modi Khola. Jhinu is known for its natural hot springs, a short walk downhill from the village. After checking into your teahouse, you can visit the springs and enjoy a warm soak beside the river.

It's a relaxing break after several days in the high mountains and a great way to end the main trekking section of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek.

Overnight: Teahouse
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast, you'll take a short walk from the teahouse to the jeep station at Jhinu Danda. From there, you'll catch a private jeep and drive back to Pokhara.

Once you arrive at your hotel, take time to freshen up and settle in after the trek. The rest of the day is free for activities, shopping, or relaxing.

You can spend the evening exploring Lakeside, walking along Phewa Lake, or enjoying a good meal after completing your Annapurna Base Camp Trek.
