Overview

The Annapurna Base Camp and Poon Hill Trek combines two of the Annapurna region's most popular walks into one journey. You'll first climb through rhododendron forests to Ghorepani and Poon Hill, then continue toward Chhomrong and follow the Modi Khola into the Annapurna Sanctuary. The trek reaches Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 meters, beneath the towering peaks of the Annapurna range.

The trail passes through Gurung villages including Ghandruk and Chhomrong, where traditional stone houses, terraced fields, temples, and teahouses are part of everyday life. Chhomrong is the last permanent village on the route to Annapurna Base Camp, with smaller settlements such as Bamboo, Dovan, and Deurali further into the sanctuary.

The first part of the trek follows forested hills toward Ghorepani and Poon Hill, one of the region's best-known viewpoints. From Poon Hill, you can see a wide panorama of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The route then climbs and descends through forest and mountain valleys before following the Modi Khola upstream toward Machhapuchhre Base Camp. From here, the trail enters the open Annapurna Sanctuary, surrounded by Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna, and Machhapuchhre.

The trek passes through the Annapurna Conservation Area, with rhododendron, bamboo, oak, and pine forests supporting Himalayan wildlife. You may encounter Himalayan tahr, musk deer, and Himalayan monal, although sightings are never guaranteed.

From the sunrise at Poon Hill to the mountains surrounding Annapurna Base Camp, the trek brings together village life, forest trails, and some of the finest mountain scenery in the Annapurna Himalayas.

Itinerary

Your adventure begins with touchdown at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Once you clear immigration and collect your bags, our airport representative will meet you in the arrivals hall and drive you to your hotel.

Your hotel is in the historic heart of Patan, on the southern side of the Kathmandu Valley, near Patan Durbar Square. Known for its temples, courtyards, artisans, and traditional Newari craftsmanship, Patan offers a quieter introduction to Kathmandu than the busy tourist areas.

Once you reach the hotel, check in and take some time to freshen up and recover from your journey. Later, your guide will meet you for a trek briefing that covers the route, accommodations, meals, walking hours, altitude, and other practical details for the days ahead.

In the evening, meet the rest of your trekking group for a welcome dinner at a local Nepali restaurant, with traditional food and cultural performances. If you arrive early, take a short walk around nearby streets and explore some of Kathmandu Valley's historic neighborhoods.

Overnight: Heritage/Boutique Hotel, Patan
Meals:
Welcome Dinner

After breakfast, your tour guide will meet you in the hotel lobby for a half-day walking tour through Patan's historic streets. Your morning begins at Patan Durbar Square, where you explore its temples, palace courtyards, and traditional Newari architecture.

From the main square, you'll head into the quieter parts of the old city, discovering hidden courtyards, bahals, bihars, shrines, and small temples tucked between narrow lanes. Patan is also renowned for its long tradition of metalwork, woodcarving, stone carving, and other Newari crafts. As you walk, you'll see artisans at work and catch a glimpse of the craftsmanship that has shaped the city for centuries.

After the heritage walk, you'll go on a local food tour. Rather than a single sit-down meal, you'll visit a few local spots around the old city to enjoy traditional Newari dishes, snacks, and sweets. After lunch, return to the hotel and enjoy a free afternoon. Use the time to pack, shop, rest, or make your final preparations for the trek. If you need to buy or rent trekking gear, let your guide know. They can take you to a reliable outdoor shop and help you get everything sorted before you leave Kathmandu.

Overnight: Heritage/Boutique Hotel, Patan
Meals:
Breakfast, Lunch

You'll begin the day with a short flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara, the gateway to the Annapurna region. On clear days, you'll enjoy majestic views of green hills and the Himalayan ranges stretching across the horizon.

Pokhara sits beneath the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, with Machhapuchhre (Mt. Fishtail) rising prominently above the city. The calm waters of Phewa Lake and the surrounding green hills give Pokhara a very different feel from Kathmandu.

After landing, your guide will transfer you to your hotel near Lakeside. Check in, freshen up, and take some time to settle in. The rest of the day is yours to explore the lakeshore, browse local shops and cafés, or simply relax at the hotel.

Overnight: Hotel, Pokhara
Meals: Breakfast

Your first day on the trail begins with a scenic drive from Pokhara toward the foothills of the Annapurna region. The road winds through green hills, small settlements, and terraced farmland before reaching Hille. You'll leave the vehicle, assemble the trekking crew, and begin a gradual walk toward Ulleri.

From Hille, you'll climb steadily through hillside villages and farmland. The trail mostly follows stone staircases through dense rhododendron forests. As you gain altitude, the air grows cooler, and the views across the surrounding hills open up.

After several hours of walking, you'll reach Ulleri, a traditional hillside village nestled among forests and terraced fields. Settle into your teahouse and enjoy your first evening in the mountains.

Overnight: Teahouse
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today is a short, moderate walk to Ghorepani. Your morning begins with a steady climb from Ulleri through a dense rhododendron forest. The trail follows a long series of stone steps and occasional switchbacks. In spring, the forested section bursts with rhododendrons and other wildflowers in red, white, and pink.

As you approach Ghorepani, the walk becomes easier. Ghorepani is a popular mountain settlement on a high ridge beneath Poon Hill. It offers majestic views of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges. Enjoy the evening at your teahouse and get an early rest, as tomorrow begins with a sunrise hike to Poon Hill.

Overnight: Teahouse
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

You'll wake before first light and begin the short climb to the summit of Poon Hill at 3,210 meters. As the sun rises, the first light reaches the summits of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, creating one of the most memorable mountain views on the trek. On a clear morning, you can enjoy a wide panorama of Himalayan peaks, including Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Machhapuchhre, Gangapurna, Tukuche Peak, Dhampus Peak, Hiunchuli, Gurja Himal, and Nilgiri Himal.

After enjoying the sunrise, you'll return to the teahouse in Ghorepani for breakfast, then continue toward Tadapani. The trail climbs and descends through rhododendron and pine forests, with occasional openings that offer views of the surrounding mountains. Along the way, you'll pass small settlements and quiet stretches of forest before reaching Tadapani. From the village, you can enjoy views of Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre.

Overnight: Teahouse
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Heading out of Tadapani, the trail descends through a forested stretch toward the Kimrong Khola. The route winds through quiet woodland and hillside settlements in Chuile before crossing the river. From there, you'll climb again along a narrow ridgeline toward Chhomrong.

Chhomrong is one of the largest Gurung villages in the Annapurna region and an important stop on the route to Annapurna Base Camp. The village sits on a steep hillside, offering close-up views of Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre.

Overnight: Teahouse
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Your day begins with a descent along stone steps toward the Chhomrong Khola. On the valley floor, you'll cross a small suspension bridge, then climb steeply through the forest toward Sinuwa.

From Sinuwa, you'll enter the lush forests of the Annapurna Conservation Area, dominated by bamboo, rhododendron, oak, and other Himalayan vegetation. The route heads deeper into the Modi Khola Valley toward the settlement of Bamboo, then continues toward Dovan.

You'll reach Dovan by afternoon. Upon arrival, take a much-needed rest, enjoy hot meals, and settle by the fireplace.

Overnight: Teahouse
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

From Dovan, you'll continue climbing through the dense forest and river gorge toward the Himalaya Hotel. You'll stop at one of the teahouses in Himalaya for mid-morning tea. After the break, you'll continue climbing toward Hinku Cave, a large natural rock overhang that has long served as shelter for early mountain expeditions.

Beyond Hinku Cave, the trail briefly descends toward the Modi Khola before climbing again toward Deurali. The forest gradually thins as the valley opens and the landscape becomes more exposed. The final push follows the Modi Khola upstream through alpine terrain to Machhapuchhre Base Camp.

Sitting beneath the distinctive peak of Mt. Machhapuchhre, MBC offers impressive views of Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and the surrounding peaks. You'll spend the night here, beneath some of the Himalayas' most recognizable peaks

Overnight: Teahouse
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast, you'll leave Machhapuchhre Base Camp for the final approach to Annapurna Base Camp. The trail climbs gradually through open alpine terrain as you head deeper into the sanctuary. The valley widens near the base camp, with mountains rising on either side of the trail.

Soon, you'll enter the Annapurna Sanctuary, a natural amphitheater surrounded by the towering peaks of Annapurna. After about 3 hours of gradual climbing, you'll reach Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 meters. From here, you can enjoy a 360-degree panorama of Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna, Machhapuchhre, and other surrounding peaks.

Take your time to explore the base camp, take in the mountain views, and savor the remarkable experience of standing within this vast Himalayan amphitheater.

Overnight: Teahouse
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today, you'll begin your return journey. After enjoying the morning views from Annapurna Base Camp, you'll descend toward the lower valley. The trail retraces your route through the Annapurna Sanctuary toward Machhapuchhre Base Camp, then continues through Deurali and Hinku Cave.

As you descend, the alpine landscape gradually gives way to dense forest. You'll continue along the Modi Khola on a forested path to reach Bamboo, where you'll spend the night.

Overnight: Teahouse
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Your final day on the trail begins with a gradual descent through the dense forest toward Sinuwa. From here, the trail drops steeply toward the river. After crossing the suspension bridge, you'll begin the steep climb up stone staircases toward Chhomrong.

From Chhomrong, you'll take an alternative trail and descend steeply for about an hour to Jhinu Danda. This small hillside village overlooks the Modi Khola and offers several decent lodges and teahouses for an overnight stay. Jhinu is famous for its natural hot springs by the river. After reaching the village and settling into your teahouse, take a short walk down to the springs and enjoy a refreshing bath and a warm dip to relieve your muscles.

Overnight: Teahouse
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast, you'll take a short downhill walk from the teahouse through the lower hills to the roadhead. You'll cross a steep, 287-meter-long suspension bridge over Modi Khola to reach the jeep station. There, you'll board a private jeep and drive back to Pokhara.

After reaching your hotel, take some time to freshen up and settle in after the trek. The rest of the day is free for activities, shopping, or relaxing. You can walk around Lakeside, spend time by Phewa Lake, or enjoy a good meal to celebrate the successful completion of your Annapurna Base Camp and Poon Hill Trek.
